California is the largest and most important wine region in the USA. The main varieties used to make Californian wines are Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay together with a wide range of traditional more European varieties such as Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel. Syrah is a dark-skinned grape variety originating from Rhône Valley, France. In Australia the variety gained a distinct personality and is known as Shiraz. The best authentic Syrah red wines are to be found in the northern part of the Rhône Valley followed by some excellent examples from California, Oregon in the US and Australia.
