The key grape varieties used to make Minho wines include Alvarinho, Avesso, Loureiro, Pedernã (Arinto) and Trajadura. Chardonnay and Riesling are the most common international white varieties. Alvarelhao, Azal Tinto, Espadeiro and Caino Tinto dominate the Minho red wine scene along with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Avesso

Avesso Wines

Avesso is a white wine grape variety originating from Minho in Portugal. It is the key grape for the region’s crisp, white Vinho Verde wines. Avesso white wines present aromas of stone fruit – white peach and ripe nectarine and those from warmer wine regions show hints of tropical fruit notes like mango. Avesso white wines are usually low in acidity which is quite the opposite from the other Vinho Verde grapes.
