Sicily Wines
Sicily is the southernmost wine region of Italy and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Nowadays many of the best Sicilian wines are dry table wines produced under the regional IGT title Terre Siciliane, Etna DOC or the Sicilia DOC. The key grape varieties used in Sicilian wines are a combination of native varieties with international new imports. To name a few Nero d'Avola, Catarratto, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio are the most important native grape varieties.
Nerello Mascalese Wines
Nerello Mascalese is a dark-skinned grape variety from the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. Nerello Mascalese wines are fruit-forward with hints of herbal notes, a great minerality and earthy tones which often remind us of Barolo and Burgundy wines. The variety also appears in red blends alongside Nerello Cappuccio grapes and they are both found under Etna DOC appellation. Recent research suggests that Nerello Mascalese is the result of natural crossing between Sangiovese and Mantonico Bianco.
