Established in 1945 by Marcel Gitton with barely one acre, the Gitton Père & Fils is a family-owned winery with its vineyards located on various distinctive soils of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Nowadays the winery is managed by Pascal Gitton and his wife Denise. Their main focus is to produce good quality Sauvignon Blanc wines that stand out for their elegant and specific flinty notes.
Loire Valley Wines
Loire Valley is France's third largest wine region. It is located along the course of the Loire river on its long journey through the Atlantic. White wines are Loire Valley's strong suit and the two most representative white wine subregions are Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, both very famous for their specific dry Sauvignon Blanc wines. Other key white-wine grape varieties used to make Loire Valley whites are Chenin Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne and Chardonnay.
Sauvignon Blanc Wines
Sauvignon Blanc is a white wine grape variety original from Bordeaux, France, where it makes a good pair with Sémillon in Sancerre. Sauvignon Blanc wines are generally associated with Pouilly-Fumé where the wine reveals a very specific flint aroma that derives from the region's particular limestone soils. A classic Sauvignon Blanc has grassy aromas with hints of nettles, blackcurrant leaf, green apples and gooseberries. Besides France, the grape makes excellent wine in New Zealand and the USA.
